CANCELLED Thursday Solar: Dance! June 18

Sorry folks, your host has had a late-breaking conflict and can’t teach this month.

We meet again for dance. It is our hope as a canton that we will bring refinement and grace back to our fair province. We will recap two 15th century Italian dances: Petit Rose and Amoroso, and then proceed to another 15th century Italian dance, Anello.

We will meet at 6 pm and continue until about 8. If you are joining us after 6, please confirm that we are still meeting.

The location is weather pending, and this page will be updated day-of with a call. We will also update the discord.

If the weather is fair: we will meet atop Belvedere Castle in Central Park.

If the weather is foul: we will meet at Þorfinn’s home: 165 W 66th Street #4E, New York, NY 10023. Tell the doorman you’re visiting Alec. (The building as a whole is wheelchair-accessible, but the bathroom is not).

In case of foul weather, we will decide as a group either to dance something that fits within a small living room, or work on whatever crafts folks bring.

The Canton of Appleholm invites you to join Þorfinnr at his home for an informal Arts & Sciences craft night, Thursday, March 19, from 6 PM to around 8 PM. We have returned to our usual third Thursday schedule.

Þorfinnr will talk through early to high medieval masculine undershirts and begin cutting out his own.

You are welcome to bring your current crafting project to work on as we chat, or a historically-inspired item you’ve made that you’d like to display or discuss with the group. Light fare will be provided, but please bring food or drink if it you wish to have it.

Gallery Saturday: Spectrum of Desire, March 28

The Canton of Appleholm invites you to join us on another informal weekend outing to one of our many world-class museums.

On Saturday, March 28, at 1 PM we’ll gather at The Cloisters to view their exhibit “Spectrum of Desire: Love, Sex, and Gender in the Middle Ages.”

Set in the stunning atmosphere of The Met Cloisters, this exhibition explores the often-overlooked themes of desire, sexuality, and gender in the medieval past, a period of time when most artistic production served religious purposes.

This is the last weekend for the exhibit, which closes March 29th.

Afterwards we can take a leisurely tour of the rest of the museum, and perhaps even see the beginnings of spring in their garden.

We’ll meet at the lower-level entrance, which is where the bus lets. off. If you miss us, call Þorfinnr at 908-799-8822 to meet inside the museum. We’ll probably spend 2-3 hours in the museum and then may find food nearby.

Visitors with proof of New York State residence may pay any amount to enter (as little as $1) and the same goes for students from NJ and CT; sadly, for other out-of-state visitors or those without ID, admission is an exorbitant $30.

All are welcome to join us. No Society membership or previous experience required. There is no charge to join us. Modern attire; come as you are. Accessibility at The Met Cloisters is somewhat limited for wheelchair and stroller users and others who need step-free access due to the building’s landmark status. A free shuttle service is available to visitors requiring step-free access to enter the building.

The Canton of Appleholm invites you to join Þorfinnr at his home for an informal Arts & Sciences craft night, Thursday, February 26, from 6 PM to around 8 PM. Note that this the fourth Thursday, one week later than our usual schedule.

We will have a shared space for craft or art work, along with a tentative discussion about 16th century menswear. If you are coming from the previous weekend’s Venetian Carnevale, this is a great place to ask about what fabulous fashions your fellows flaunted!
