Evening in the Solar, Thurs. Feb. 6th

Please join us Thursday, February 6, at 7:30pm for a class on sourcing raw materials for your projects!

It can be hard to find the right fiber, fabric, notions, and other items for your A&S projects. Þórfinnr and Vika will discuss both where and how to shop, what to look out for, and what (broadly speaking) to expect to pay for various kinds of materiel.

The class is not at the usual solar location. It will be held in Rm. 111 of the Milstein Center at Barnard College. No ID is required to enter campus or the building for this event. The building and the room are accessible.

To get to Barnard, take the 1 train to 116th & Broadway, and enter the main campus gates on the west side of Broadway at 117th St. (There are campus maps posted just inside the gate.)

Commons Meeting & Evening in the Solar, Jan. 9

Please join us on Thursday, January 9, for a Commons meeting and an Evening in the Solar.

This is our usual quarterly commons and business meeting. If you have anything you’d like to put on the agenda, please email the Seneschal.

Following Commons, please stay for a class on photography in museums, taught by Lord Simon Talbot. It can be challenging to get good photos of museum objects – come learn some pointers to enhance your technique!

Different location: The Commons and the Solar will be hosted at Þórfinnr‘s: 165 W. 66th St., Apt. 4E. Commons will begin at 7pm, and the solar will follow.

Evening in the Solar, Thurs. November 7

Please join us Thursday, November 7, at 7:30pm for a class on Elizabethan-era clothing, taught by Mistress Vika Grigina z Prahy. The Crown Province will be hosting the kingdom Twelfth Night celebration with an Elizabethan/Shakespearean theme, so now is a great time to think about what to wear!

The class will present a survey of the different garments that comprise a late-16th-century person’s outfit, including options for all levels of society. Following that, we will offer consulting assistance to help you put together a plan for your outfit, suited to your available time, resources, and comfort level.

The class is not at the usual solar location. It will be held at Rm. 502 of the Diana Center at Barnard College. No ID is required to enter campus or the building for this event. The building and the room are accessible.

To get to Barnard, take the 1 train to 116th & Broadway, and enter the main campus gates on the west side of Broadway at 117th St. The Diana Center is the orange-glass building to the right across a small lawn. (There are also campus maps posted just inside the gate.)

Do not come to the room before 7:15pm, as there is a class in that space before us.

Commons Meeting and Evening in the Solar, October 3rd – DIFFERENT LOCATION

Please join us on Thursday, October 3rd, for a Commons meeting and an Evening in the Solar.

This is our usual quarterly commons and business meeting. If you have anything you’d like to put on the agenda, please email the Seneschal. (Also, bring receipts from recent demos for reimbursement.)

Following Commons, please stay for a class on Introduction to Natural Dyeing, taught by Lord Þórfinnr Hróðgeirsson! We will explore dyeing with the chief trifecta of European dyes: madder red, weld yellow and woad blue.

If you wish to actively take part in dyeing, please wear clothing that can get stained very permanently, and bring a clean, white protein fiber such as wool.  We will most likely be dyeing blue, as it is the quickest.  If you wish to dye red or yellow, please reach out to Þórfinnr ahead of time so we can get you set up.

Different location: The Commons and the Solar will be hosted at Þórfinnr‘s: 165 W. 66th St., Apt. 4E. Commons will begin at 7pm, and the solar will follow.

Commons Meeting & Evening in the Solar, Sep. 5

Please join us on Thursday, September 5, for a Commons meeting and an Evening in the Solar.

This is our usual non-quarterly commons and business meeting; the primary topic will be the upcoming demo at the New York Medieval Festival on Sep. 29. If you have anything else you’d like to put on the agenda, please email seneschal@whytwhey.eastkingdom.org.

Following Commons, please stay for a roundtable on “Share what you leaned at Pennsic!” What cool/interesting/illuminating classes did you take? Bring any handouts or details you’d like to share.

We will be at the usual location, 255 W. 105th St., #21. Commons will begin at 7pm, and the solar will follow.
