Gallery Saturday: Spectrum of Desire, March 28

The Canton of Appleholm invites you to join us on another informal weekend outing to one of our many world-class museums.

On Saturday, March 28, at 1 PM we’ll gather at The Cloisters to view their exhibit “Spectrum of Desire: Love, Sex, and Gender in the Middle Ages.”

Set in the stunning atmosphere of The Met Cloisters, this exhibition explores the often-overlooked themes of desire, sexuality, and gender in the medieval past, a period of time when most artistic production served religious purposes.

This is the last weekend for the exhibit, which closes March 29th.

Afterwards we can take a leisurely tour of the rest of the museum, and perhaps even see the beginnings of spring in their garden.

We’ll meet at the lower-level entrance, which is where the bus lets. off. If you miss us, call Þorfinnr at 908-799-8822 to meet inside the museum. We’ll probably spend 2-3 hours in the museum and then may find food nearby.

Visitors with proof of New York State residence may pay any amount to enter (as little as $1) and the same goes for students from NJ and CT; sadly, for other out-of-state visitors or those without ID, admission is an exorbitant $30.

All are welcome to join us. No Society membership or previous experience required. There is no charge to join us. Modern attire; come as you are. Accessibility at The Met Cloisters is somewhat limited for wheelchair and stroller users and others who need step-free access due to the building’s landmark status. A free shuttle service is available to visitors requiring step-free access to enter the building.

Feel free to RSVP to events@appleholm.eastkingdom.org or just show up and join us. We look forward to seeing you soon!

Thursday Solar, February 26

The Canton of Appleholm invites you to join Þorfinnr at his home for an informal Arts & Sciences craft night, Thursday, February 26, from 6 PM to around 8 PM. Note that this the fourth Thursday, one week later than our usual schedule.

We will have a shared space for craft or art work, along with a tentative discussion about 16th century menswear. If you are coming from the previous weekend’s Venetian Carnevale, this is a great place to ask about what fabulous fashions your fellows flaunted!

You are welcome to bring your current crafting project to work on as we chat, or a historically-inspired item you’ve made that you’d like to display or discuss with the group. Light fare will be provided, but please bring food or drink if it you wish to have it.

Location: 165 W 66th Street #4E, New York, NY 10023. Tell the doorman you’re visiting Alec. (The building as a whole is wheelchair-accessible, but the bathroom is not.)

All are welcome to join us. No Society membership or previous experience required. No fee. Modern attire; come as you are. We look forward to seeing you!

Join Us for Appleholm Autumn Commons

Appleholm calls all residents and interested parties to our quarterly commons meeting to discuss what activities we should run in the canton and whether our current officer bank is sustainable. (If you would like to discuss something else, please reach out to seneschal@appleholm.eastkingdom.org to add it to the agenda.)

Please join us at 7 PM on Monday, November 17, at meet.google.com/azp-fqtb-dbn.

A Very Colorful Pride Eve

Reprising last year’s visit, a trio of Appleholmies ventured to our local progressive cathedral (among the world’s largest) for a colorful celebration on the eve of Queer Pride month.

It was fabulous to spend an evening in garb with friends, sipping wine and appreciating the incredible diversity of our city’s crafters, cosplayers, and historical-fashion enthusiasts — we hope you’ll be able to join us when we go again next year!

Evenings in Appleholm: Pride Eve, Saturday May 31

The Canton of Appleholm invites you to join us for a sociable evening of historically-themed fun and glamor.

On Saturday May 31, starting at 6 PM, we’ll visit St. John’s, our local progressive gothic cathedral, for a medieval-themed Pride Eve event hosted by Internet personality the Greedy Peasant. Expect fabulous attire, cocktails, crafting stations, and campy performances.

The initial batch of tickets has sold out, but a “last-minute” round of tickets will be available for $45 via the cathedral’s website on May 27; these will likely also sell out very quickly. (Higher-priced tickets are available for those who want to financially support the event, but do not come with any extra perks.)

Historical clothing is optional but encouraged, especially in bright chromatic hues to match the pride rainbow theme.

The cathedral is located on Amsterdam Avenue at 112th Street. The closest subways are the 1 train or the B/C lines, both of which have Cathedral Parkway / 110th Street stations; there are also numerous bus lines in the area.

We’ll gather on the steps out front (or in the vestibule if the weather is inclement) and enter as a group. (If you miss us at the entrance, call Mathghamhain at 917-502-7795 to link up with us inside.) The event should last about three hours.

The building is ADA accessible, with a ramp to bypass the front steps. Masks are optional.

This is not an SCA-organized event, so we’ll be joined by lots of other folks who are into history and DIY fashion, and might get a chance to connect with other people who share our interests.

Burp Castle, April 9

To further the Canton’s understanding of beer production and monastic life, we are having a social outing to Burp Castle in the West Village on Wednesday, April 9 at about 5:30.

Burp Castle is located at 41 East 7th Street and serves a rotating menu of mostly-Belgian beers. The bar is small and enforces quiet speech.

All are welcome to join us. No Society membership or previous experience required.

Sunday Solar, March 30: Brewing Basics

The Canton of Appleholm invites you to join us for our monthly afternoon of crafting, conversation and companionship!

For this month’s gathering, Wojtek z Wizny will present “A Brief History of Beer (and how to make it in your apartment).” Aimed at first-time brewers, this talk will cover the basics of fermented beverages and the modern homebrewing movement, and show you how to brew a simple ale in a New York apartment.

You are welcome to bring a handcraft to work on, a snack to share, a story to tell, or questions you want to explore — or walk in empty-handed and leave with freshly-learned skills, a full belly, and new friendships!

We’ll gather at 3:00 PM on Sunday, March 30 at the home of our chatelaine Madwen Gam, at 569 W 161st Street, buzzer 6, just east of Broadway. (Note that this site is upstairs and is not wheelchair-accessible.)

All are welcome to join us. No Society membership or previous experience required. No fee. Modern attire; come as you are. Feel free to RSVP or just come by and say hello!
