Evenings in Appleholm: Pride Eve, Saturday May 31

The Canton of Appleholm invites you to join us for a sociable evening of historically-themed fun and glamor.

On Saturday May 31, starting at 6 PM, we’ll visit St. John’s, our local progressive gothic cathedral, for a medieval-themed Pride Eve event hosted by Internet personality the Greedy Peasant. Expect fabulous attire, cocktails, crafting stations, and campy performances. 

The initial batch of tickets has sold out, but a “last-minute” round of tickets will be available for $45 via the cathedral’s website on May 27; these will likely also sell out very quickly. (Higher-priced tickets are available for those who want to financially support the event, but do not come with any extra perks.)

Historical clothing is optional but encouraged, especially in bright chromatic hues to match the pride rainbow theme.

The cathedral is located on Amsterdam Avenue at 112th Street. The closest subways are the 1 train or the B/C lines, both of which have Cathedral Parkway / 110th Street stations; there are also numerous bus lines in the area. 

We’ll gather on the steps out front (or in the vestibule if the weather is inclement) and enter as a group. (If you miss us at the entrance, call Mathghamhain to link up with us inside.) The event should last about three hours. 

The building is ADA accessible, with a ramp to bypass the front steps. Masks are optional.

This is not an SCA-organized event, so we’ll be joined by lots of other folks who are into history and DIY fashion, and might get a chance to connect with other people who share our interests.

Burp Castle, April 9

To further the Canton’s understanding of beer production and monastic life, we are having a social outing to Burp Castle in the West Village on Wednesday, April 9 at about 5:30. 

Burp Castle is located at 41 East 7th Street and serves a rotating menu of mostly-Belgian beers. The bar is small and enforces quiet speech.

Sunday Solar, March 30: Brewing Basics

The Canton of Appleholm invites you to join us for our monthly afternoon of crafting, conversation and companionship!

For this month’s gathering, Wojtek z Wizny will present “A Brief History of Beer (and how to make it in your apartment).” Aimed at first-time brewers, this talk will cover the basics of fermented beverages and the modern homebrewing movement, and show you how to brew a simple ale in a New York apartment.

You are welcome to bring a handcraft to work on, a snack to share, a story to tell, or questions you want to explore — or walk in empty-handed and leave with freshly-learned skills, a full belly, and new friendships!

We’ll gather at 3:00 PM on Sunday, March 30 at the home of our chatelaine Madwen Gam, at 569 W 161st Street, buzzer 6, just east of Broadway. (Note that this site is upstairs and is not wheelchair-accessible.)

The Canton of Appleholm invites you to join us for an afternoon of holiday cheer in a cozy kitchen!

As the year comes to an end, let’s come together to bake cookies, decorate them with heraldic and medieval designs, then enjoy them with a mug of mulled cider or bubbly holiday beverage.

If you’re into baking, you can prepare some cookies ahead of time and bring them over to decorate with the group — or just show up and we’ll hand you some cookie cutters and a bag of frosting and let you run wild.

A Sunday in Siena

We had a nice turnout for today’s trip to the Met, with seven people gathering to view an interesting mix of paintings and artifacts from the fourteenth century. Afterwards we stopped in the recently-refreshed painting galleries to peek at some of the subsequent developments.

As we noted multiple times during the trip, there are at least a dozen other halls filled with items we’d like to examine on a future visit, so I’m sure we’ll be back again in the months ahead. Keep an eye out for additional announcements and we’d love to have you join us on our next outing!

Gallery Sunday: Painting in Siena, December 8

The Canton of Appleholm invites you to join us on another informal weekend outing to one of our many world-class museums.

On Sunday, December 8, at 2:00 we’ll gather at the Met to view their exhibit “Siena: The Rise of Painting, 1300–1350” which highlights some of the artistic developments at the dawn of the renaissance. In addition to large paintings (and so much gold leaf!) the exhibit also includes a few books, textiles, and carvings. Afterwards, we can pass through the recently-reopened European painting galleries, which had been closed for the last few years to allow for renovation of the building’s skylights.

We’ll meet up on the front steps, weather permitting, or in the lobby atrium, and then enter as a group. (If you miss us there, call Mathghamhain to link up inside the museum.) We’ll probably spend about two hours in the museum, and when we’re done some of us may walk over to Madison to get a snack in a local diner.

Visitors with proof of New York State residence may pay any amount to enter (as little as $1) and the same goes for students from NJ and CT; sadly, for other out-of-state visitors or those without ID, admission is an exorbitant $30.
