Reprising last year’s visit, a trio of Appleholmies ventured to our local progressive cathedral (among the world’s largest) for a colorful celebration on the eve of Queer Pride month.
It was fabulous to spend an evening in garb with friends, sipping wine and appreciating the incredible diversity of our city’s crafters, cosplayers, and historical-fashion enthusiasts — we hope you’ll be able to join us when we go again next year!
The Canton of Appleholm invites you to join us for a sociable evening of historically-themed fun and glamor.
On Saturday May 31, starting at 6 PM, we’ll visit St. John’s, our local progressive gothic cathedral, for a medieval-themed Pride Eve event hosted by Internet personality the Greedy Peasant. Expect fabulous attire, cocktails, crafting stations, and campy performances.
The initial batch of tickets has sold out, but a “last-minute” round of tickets will be available for $45 via the cathedral’s website on May 27; these will likely also sell out very quickly. (Higher-priced tickets are available for those who want to financially support the event, but do not come with any extra perks.)
Historical clothing is optional but encouraged, especially in bright chromatic hues to match the pride rainbow theme.
The cathedral is located on Amsterdam Avenue at 112th Street. The closest subways are the 1 train or the B/C lines, both of which have Cathedral Parkway / 110th Street stations; there are also numerous bus lines in the area.
We’ll gather on the steps out front (or in the vestibule if the weather is inclement) and enter as a group. (If you miss us at the entrance, call Mathghamhain at 917-502-7795 to link up with us inside.) The event should last about three hours.
The building is ADA accessible, with a ramp to bypass the front steps. Masks are optional.
This is not an SCA-organized event, so we’ll be joined by lots of other folks who are into history and DIY fashion, and might get a chance to connect with other people who share our interests.
To further the Canton’s understanding of beer production and monastic life, we are having a social outing to Burp Castle in the West Village on Wednesday, April 9 at about 5:30.
Burp Castle is located at 41 East 7th Street and serves a rotating menu of mostly-Belgian beers. The bar is small and enforces quiet speech.
All are welcome to join us. No Society membership or previous experience required.
The Canton of Appleholm invites you to join us for our monthly afternoon of crafting, conversation and companionship!
For this month’s gathering, Wojtek z Wizny will present “A Brief History of Beer (and how to make it in your apartment).” Aimed at first-time brewers, this talk will cover the basics of fermented beverages and the modern homebrewing movement, and show you how to brew a simple ale in a New York apartment.
You are welcome to bring a handcraft to work on, a snack to share, a story to tell, or questions you want to explore — or walk in empty-handed and leave with freshly-learned skills, a full belly, and new friendships!
We’ll gather at 3:00 PM on Sunday, March 30 at the home of our chatelaine Madwen Gam, at 569 W 161st Street, buzzer 6, just east of Broadway. (Note that this site is upstairs and is not wheelchair-accessible.)
All are welcome to join us. No Society membership or previous experience required. No fee. Modern attire; come as you are. Feel free to RSVP or just come by and say hello!

Please join us for the canton’s quarterly business meeting on Monday, January 27, starting at 7 PM via Google Meet: https://meet.google.com/azp-fqtb-dbn
We’ll review recent local activity and discuss possible plans for the coming months. We can also consider any other business raised by the officers or populace. As always, folks are welcome to hang out and socialize following the conclusion of the meeting.
Our gatherings are open to everyone. No Society membership or previous experience required. Modern attire; come as you are. We look forward to seeing you!
The Canton of Appleholm invites you to join us for a cozy evening of handcrafts, nibbles, and chit-chat as our hostess prepares a chocolate-and-toffee treat for all to share.
(Please note that due to scheduling challenges, this month’s gathering has been pushed later in the day than usual.)
We’ll gather at 7:30 PM on Sunday, January 26 at the home of our chatelaine Madwen Gam, at 569 W 161st Street, buzzer 6, just east of Broadway. (Note that this site is upstairs and is not wheelchair-accessible.)

Thanks to everyone who dropped by for this weekend’s holiday party and participated in decorating cookies with heraldic designs.
Sadly, I didn’t get pictures of all of the cookies, or of the hot mulled beverages simmering on the stove, but hopefully the photos below will give you a hint of how the day went.
The Canton of Appleholm invites you to join us for an afternoon of holiday cheer in a cozy kitchen!
As the year comes to an end, let’s come together to bake cookies, decorate them with heraldic and medieval designs, then enjoy them with a mug of mulled cider or bubbly holiday beverage.
If you’re into baking, you can prepare some cookies ahead of time and bring them over to decorate with the group — or just show up and we’ll hand you some cookie cutters and a bag of frosting and let you run wild.
We’ll gather at 3:00 PM on Sunday, December 29 at the home of our chatelaine Madwen Gam, at 569 W 161st Street, buzzer 6, just east of Broadway. (Note that this site is upstairs and is not wheelchair-accessible.)

We had a nice turnout for today’s trip to the Met, with seven people gathering to view an interesting mix of paintings and artifacts from the fourteenth century. Afterwards we stopped in the recently-refreshed painting galleries to peek at some of the subsequent developments.
As we noted multiple times during the trip, there are at least a dozen other halls filled with items we’d like to examine on a future visit, so I’m sure we’ll be back again in the months ahead. Keep an eye out for additional announcements and we’d love to have you join us on our next outing!
